Hi Helen! Thanks so much for visiting my blog! In order to just focus on one area in a photo and blur out the background, you have to set your aperture to a very low number 1.8, 2.2, 2.8, etc... This will cause only a small part of your photo to be in focus, while the rest is blurry. I don't think you can do that with a point and shoot camera (is that what you have?) since you can't set your aperture. Also, setting your aperture low, slowing down your shutter speed, and bumping up your ISO will allow you to take pictures in lower light without a flash. Did any of that make sense? I hope that helped!
