I don´t know what to read! I really feel empty after finishing both the whole Potter and Twilight series this year. Usually I prefer the lady crime books, such as Elizabeth George, Deborah Crombie, that stuff, but after reading so much Fantasy now, I´m looking for something from that genre, and I´m looking for something that might capture my heart again :-) I´ve tried both Eragon and Lord of the Rings, but I didn´t like the style of writing.
So, I´d be glad for every suggestion, because good books always leave such a void when they´re over... *sigh*

Hi Helen! I understand completely about the void. I'm re-reading the Twilight series again! I belong to a book club and this month we are reading A Thousand Splendid Suns. It's no Twilight, but it's not bad!
I am a Fantasy nut ;)
(I actually thought Twilight was one of the 'lesser' vampire books I read though :) )
You could try:
The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud (Harry POtterish, but with a twist)
House of the Night Series by P.C. Cast + Kristin Cast (Vampire School, but in my eyes more believable teenagers and such a nice easy read)
The Symphony of Ages Series by Elizabeth Hayden
The Innocent Mage + The Awakened Mage by Karen Miller
Magic lost, Trouble found + Armed&Magical by Lisa Shearin
Weather Warden Series by Rachel Caine
and and and and
:)
I'll second the The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud (the genie is full of black humor). I also liked the Inkworld trilogy by Cornelia Funke.
I didn't understand why my 13 yr old loved the Twilight Books..before we saw the movie I decided to read Twilight and loved it..then read the remaining 3 books(I couldn't put em down)loved the movie but was a bit disappointed and have no idea how they will make each book a movie as they get longer and more intricate.)
My daughter is now sick of Twilight..but I am still obsessed..lol
My 13 year old loves all the Narnia books, she is currently reading all the Harry Potter books again, She loved Inkheart and Inkspell and wants me to buy her the next book(I think I got the names right.) When we go back to the Library I will have to recommend the Bartimaeus Trilogy, now that I have seen you all bringing it up. :)
I have enjoyed the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. It is a fantastic blend of historical and science fiction but be forewarned, some bookstores place them in the romance section (And there are some very adult content in these pages.) Personally I skim most of that and get on with the story at hand. I've found the books equally as addictive as the Potter series.
from Amazon...Absorbing and heartwarming, this first novel lavishly evokes the land and lore of Scotland, quickening both with realistic characters and a feisty, likable heroine. English nurse Claire Beauchamp Randall and husband Frank take a second honeymoon in the Scottish Highlands in 1945. When Claire walks through a cleft stone in an ancient henge, she's somehow transported to 1743. She encounters Frank's evil ancestor, British captain Jonathan "Black Jack" Randall, and is adopted by another clan. Claire nurses young soldier James Fraser, a gallant, merry redhead, and the two begin a romance, seeing each other through many perilous, swashbuckling adventures involving Black Jack. Scenes of the Highlanders' daily life blend poignant emotions with Scottish wit and humor. Eventually Sassenach (outlander) Claire finds a chance to return to 1945, and must choose between distant memories of Frnak and her happy, uncomplicated existence with Jamie. Claire's resourcefulness and intelligent sensitivity make the love-conquers-all, happily-ever-after ending seem a just reward.
Philip Pullman's trilogy, is amazing - similar to Harry Potter in terms of a fantasy world, but the writing is much better. Somewhat heretical, but amazing storytelling. The titles are:
The Golden Compass,
The Amber Spyglass, and
The Subtle Knife
(I may have the order of #2 and #3 confused... it's been a while since I read them).
Happy reading!
Have you read any of the Amlia Peabody series? They are set in 1900 turn-of-the century Egypt, feature mystery and a little archeology and egyptology as well. I have listened to them on audio books, makes a trip go by faster! I think she is up to Bk 18, so if you like them, there will be plenty more.
